Here are some comments from our guests about their safaris or guiding experiences with guides Dave Christensen, Justin Bell, Squack Evans, Njano Mbilinyi, Marc Baker or Ole Kirimbai.

March 2008

Gillian Lyons“ Hi Gillian, We had the BEST safari with Justin, Ole and Dave, it was as good as it gets! Thanks again for everything you did for us. I hope Justin told you that on our last night in the Serengeti we had a toast to you and all of your hard work to make our safari such a success!”
Sherri Magee, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Justin Bell “ Your planning, guiding, and attention to every detail have shown us a "natural Africa". That has left a permanent imprint and taught us the balance of nature. I hope one day we will have the opportunity to return and see more. We are bitten! Your unexpected treats and entertainment have made our 10 days so much fun and we are grateful to all of your wonderful people for the most memorable time! ”
Darrell and David Mendell, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Justin Bell “ Arriving here 10 days ago and putting ourselves in your capable hands has proved a very wise decision. Every part of this trip has been superlative, culminating with seeing two cheetah kills within an hour. My wish is that the Africa that rests in my heart right now will always be there. The only way we can leave is knowing that we will one day return.”
Stephanie Carlson, Vancouver, BC, Canada

December 2007

Ole Kirimbai “ Ole: opened himself to us and shared very candidly about his culture and people and what is was like to be traditional and yet deal with the issues looking at modernizing their world. But more than that, he is a most wonderful human being who is the model ambassador for human beings. In a place where we were feeling our real "animalness" and place in the evolutionary track and feeling a real pull to the physical part of our being, Ole was showing us how to be human and how to love all creatures. ”

Justin Bell “ Justin: yes, he was fun and shared his sense of adventure and obviously loved where he was - my favorite was when he said "ok on a count of three we will slow the car, all jump out, and lay flat on the ground and the car will keep going and we'll see how close the wildebeest will come" - and knowing that we were tired of driving and letting us get out and walk in front of the car - and all those little things that make a guide great instead of just good. And his passion for what he was showing us and talking about and wanting to protect all add up. And putting just the right experiences and places into the package. But what made it more was his intelligent commentary on things like his perspective of how the world works and what is in store in the future and what we need to deal with, all which made us think and wonder and grow. ”
Ann Rohrbacher, Centerville, WA

Justin Bell “ Wow, what an amazing experience this has been! Everything has surpassed every expectation or hope. I will always cherish this trip for many reasons. You and the crew have made every day unbelievable. Your knowledge and love for wildlife is contagious! Africa is an incredible place and I feel blessed to have experienced it with you!”
Bree Tania Barnes, Seattle, WA

Justin Bell “ Thank you so much for introducing us to the magic of Africa. Your enthusiasm for all of the life and the way it works is truly contagious. What could have been a very nice trip was made the best experience I can imagine.”
Laura Rohrbacher, CO

October 2007

Justin Bell “ I remember the stillness that fell upon all of us. Did we stop breathing when she came so close we could touch her, wondering if she would reach her powerful trunk into the vehicle? This is just one of the many majical moments we spent with you while viewing the wildlife in the Selous and Ruaha. ..... Kili(manjaro) 12 years ago and now a bit of southern Tanzania.”
Kathy Pitner, Aspen, CO

Justin Bell “ Bernie and I consider every day and night under the immense African sky a look into the soul of your Africa. Your excellent eye, a lifetime of learning and obvious pleasure in sharing has been our perfect 30th anniversary gift. Eternity maybe staring into the eye of an elephant.”
Barbara Cain, Santa Barbara, CA

September 2007

Dave Christensen “ To Dave the great guide of Africa! You showed me a world I didn't know existed! Through your lens, knowledge, passion and patience, I am now an animal enthusiast and birder!!”
Melanie Sabelhaus, Owings Mills, MD

August 2007

Wilderness Africa “ The magic of Africa has been made apparent to our group through your impeccable planning and staff. I have never seen people anticipate and delight in all the great treasures of Tanzania as our group has! If we could all be in the car 24 hours a day we would!...... We have seen Africa in her greatest glory, thanks to you, your incredible staff, and lovely Gillian.”
Franny Abbott, West Chester, PA

Justin Bell “ This has been a trip of contrasts: the geography, the environment and the culture. The last ten days have been the most significant days of my life.”
Eliza Zimmerman, Chester Springs, PA

Justin Bell “ You've made our safari an unforgettable experience. At every step of the way we have been met with excitement, adventure, fun and enthusiasm tempered with the right level of safety and extraordinary levels of expertise. Incredible planning, flexibility, unbridled energy on your part and your staff have made the vacation a gift. To see the boys and Steffi engaged every day is a testament to all of you. Thank you.”
Janice Barger, San Francisco, CA

Justin Bell“ Our group was fairly hard to accommodate because of our need for a ludicrous amount of exercise, but you succeeded glowingly in all that area as well.”
Gus Steyer, San Francisco, CA

Dave Christensen“ I've had fun hanging out with you this week. Between your deep knowledge of wildlife, your putting a huge beetle in your mouth, your braining an elephant from the hip, and your kind polite way of dealing with people, you are a good example of what a man should be.”
Sam Steyer, San Francisco, CA

July 2007

Patti Sax, Lafayette, CA

Dave Christensen, “Who would have thought that we would be hunched over our guide, digging dung beetles out of elephant dung, of following wild dogs in pursuit of their wildebeest kill, or sitting quietly watching a lioness with her four cubs. In every conceivable situation, you had a story to share; a tale to tell, a moving anecdote. You are much more than a guide; your passion and enthusiasm for all the complex interelationships in nature and your love for all things big and small sets you apart. You are awesome!”
Kathy Wolf, Orinda, CA

February 2007

Dave Christensen, “How could Tanzania be more interesting, more beautiful, more stunning, more mysterious? Dave, you've made that all happen for us. Your knowledge of the animals, plants, birds, and all the rest is absolutely encyclopedic; your ability to share it with us - to make it more comprehensible, and indeed thrilling, is masterful. ”
Barbara Wrubel and Sheila Birnbaum, Long Island, NY

Justin Bell, “Thanks for a wonderful time! The whole trip was fascinating, and we will never forget the herds spread accross the Serengeti as far as the eye could see. All the staff were lovely and attentive. We have done a number of great trips through Africa, but we can honestly say that you and Dave were our very best guides. We also appreciated your unfailing good humor throughout. Thanks so much.”
John and Dana Donovan, Bel Air, CA

Dave Christensen, “ When we heard that we were to be guided by Justin and “Dave&rdquo we wondered who this Dave guy was. The answer - a prince of a guide. We loved traveling with you. Thanks for being my guide and sherpa and most especially my photography teacher and for sharing your love of the African bush - and your expertise - with us. ”
Kathy Bristor, Long Island, NY

Dave Christensen, “ After one month with you, we feel like we have spent our time with one great friend who happens to be a great guide. You were always knowledgeable and interested in getting us as excited about this wonderful world as you are. We will look forward to our next adventure with you and Justin - perhaps canoeing and walking through Zimbabwe. ”
John and Dana Donovan, Bel Air, CA

Gillian, “a note to thank you for your excellent planning and organizational skills pertaining to our trip. You were right, it was the trip of a lifetime, but would not have been nearly as nice had it not been planned to perfection. Be well, and ifyou ever find yourself in the northeast, you will be welcomed at our little farm here in Rhode Island. All good

August 2006

Justin, Squack and Ole Kirimbai “Our safari adventure truly exceeded all levels of expectations – it’s different to capture, in a few words, how special you made our two weeks in Tanzania!....Ole, Squack and Justin – you embraced our three generations and never faltered in making this the most magnificent, memorable, rewarding, once-in-a-lifetime experience!”
Kirsten and Steve Heinemann, Cold Spring Harbor, NY

“18 months of planning with Gillian and you, and I thought our expectations were neatly wrapped in an exciting 15 day safari itinerary. Little did we know that the wisest of our decisions was picking Wilderness Africa and especially you, Justin, as our leader. We entrusted you our most valuable possessions, our son and daughter, their spouses, and our wonderful grandchildren to you. Our expectations have been exceeded. We have truly experienced a lifelong exposure and learning of nature. Your caring, pleasant guidance, you connection to our family, and your intimate respect and knowledge of your life’s devotion to your profession are of the highest order. We are fortunate that you have chosen to share this precious skill. Your attention to detail, your constant expressions of concern for our satisfaction, and yes, your terrific staff… Ole of course, whom we have a special feeling for, and Squack, the man with the treasured knowledge and professional poise. Thank you, Justin. You have added a special aspect to our 12 lives. Not only Tanzania’s great natural treasures, but connecting us with people, from the Bells to the Masai.”
Jim Schubauer I, Cold Spring Harbor, NY

“Dear Justin, Even though this is my first trip to Africa, I’ll bet anything that this will be my favorite. I had such a great time. You taught me so much about all the animals, EXCEPT CHEETAHS! That’s okay. We saw a lot of cats. I learned so muc about the areas that we went to. I especially liked the Masai village and school. It was cool to learn about a different life-style. I’ll miss the “tomorrow” speech tomorrow, but I’ll be able to remember that. I hope you’ll still be a guide when I’ll be able to take my whole family to Africa, so we can have as great a trip as we did for the past two weeks again.”
Julia Schubauer (10 years old), Cold Spring Harbor, NY.

Dave Christensen, “Dave: Your patience, skill, knowledge, and effervescent personality made our first safari a true joy. Thank you for your gift to us....the gift of sharing your love of Africa! ”
Elliot Evers, San Francisco, CA

Dave Christensen, “Not only are you an expert in the bush, your love for these wide spaces is contagious. You reminded me of the beauty of imagination and curiosity of animals that I thought had disappeared with age. Truly. Dave, your expertise in the bush was astounding, but I think the experience with you in the Masai school and village turned me into one of your biggest fans. You exhude respect. You tread lightly. You watch, you listen you feel.....so thank you for showing me and my family a different part of the world. ”
Remy Monteko-Sherman, New York City, NY

Justin Bell “What a great trip! Justin was great and took terrific care of everyone on our climb. He was very attentive to detail. Everyone in our group made it to the summit of Kilimanjaro and from the looks of the other climbing groups it was clear that we were being treated much better! All of the guides and porters were excellent also. I climbed Kilimanjaro in 1999 and had a great time but this trip with Wilderness Africa was far superior. I look forward to future trips with Justin.”
Larry Linder, Edgewater, MD

Justin Bell, “Justin, it has truly been a great adventure! Summit Day was the ultimate challenge and extremely rewarding. From experience, I know how challenging the logistics of a trip can be – and you and your team are definitely pros. Thank you for all your organization, encouragement and kindness. This has been a trip to remember and I will recommend Wilderness Africa to all.”
Chuck Donnelly, USA

Justin,Justin Bell, “My dad and I had an incredible week with you climbing up Kili. Your people skills, your easy nature, your knowledge of all the flora and fauna, only added to the experience. Your trip was top notch as were all the guides and porters that made it possible for all of us to summit. 100% success! A testament to you guys! Thanks for the amazing trip!”
Pat and Lel Tone, Manhattan, NY.

Justin, Justin Bell, “Great trip! A wonderful combination of fun and service. I look forward to returning with my entire family in a few years to experience safari, Wilderness Africa style. Thanks!”

Ted Aronson, Philadelphia PA

Justin & Dave, “Your boundless and infectious enthusiasm for even the most minute detail of Africa’s ecology is a quality that has brought my sister and I the greatest joy on this wonderful journey. … We experienced something profound, through the unrelenting efforts of both of you to give us a glimpse of the complexity, beauty, grandeur and even cruelty of nature itself, through the lens of one of the world’s last, greatest natural treasures (the Serengeti).”

February 2005

Justin, “It is rare that reality exceeds fantasy and expectations, but this two weeks certainly did. Everything from the planning of this trip to the fabulous meals, great game driving and walking were the best. But, most important, your involvement, caring, and vast knowledge really made this trip full of wonder.”
Steve Feinberg, Santa Fe NM

September 2004

Dave, “You have made our second trip to Africa as memorable as the first – and I thank you so very much. You have shared your love of the animals, plants, birds, and the special uniqueness of each. You have answered all of our questions – both silly and profound with wonderful graciousness and professionalism, and in the process we have come away with a greater understanding of the peoples and a greater appreciation for the animal life – both flora and fauna.”
Nicki and John Geigert, California

July 2004

Justin & Mike, “I don’t think any of us knew quite what to expect on this journey, but truly nothing could have prepared us for the wonder, the beauty and the warm hospitality and friendship you have offered us. You have spread before us the magnificence of Tanzania and have shared your boundless enthusiasm and knowledge, your passion for the natural wonders of Africa. You have given us an appreciation for peoples and cultures and histories so different, and sometimes not so different, from our own. You have guided and cared for our boys as if they were your own, with endless patience and creativity. Running through the Serengeti at dusk, fishing for catfish, tracking lions, jumping in hot springs, playing soccer in the river bed, or teaching Nathaniel rugby on the Selous sands…. ”
Cathy Hogg, Laurel Hollow NY

Justin & Mike, “I was worried before we came (being the most practical member of the family), about wild animals and scary diseases and raiding savage tribesmen and quicksand and all kinds of silly things, and they all seem very silly now thinking about the fancy three course meals and lavender scented soap and all the other luxuries we enjoyed out in the middle of the bush. Everything has been so great.”
Alex Hogg, Laurel Hollow NY

Mike & Justin, “Mike, you have shown such love and patience, caring and creativity to all our children that we really can’t thank you enough. The safari has been truly outstanding. But the safari has gone way beyond spotting. Yes, it has been a real adventure. Actually, I think it has been a real coming of age event for our two oldest sons. Alex is a perfect example of what a success this has been. From a somewhat unwilling member of the expedition to a real enthusiast for Africa. Thank you both for that…. As for the two youngest sons, I don’t think they will want to return home, they’d rather stay with you. They most of all (but not only them), have truly become enchanted with your Africa. What a wonderful gift to them.”
Chris Hogg, Laurel Hollow NY

They are very impressionable, as are all kids their age, and as such I believe this experience will always be fondly remembered as the single greatest adventure of their youth.”
J.C. Giordano

Justin & Mike, “This was the third safari with you and, if possible, the best of all.”

January 2001

Oliver Parr, London.

December 2000

Mike & Ole Kirimbai, "The grace and beauty of people and animals we will never forget. Africa has awoken in all of the De Kertanguy's a new sense of time and purpose 'to live and let live'. The watchful guidance of Mike and Kirimbai and their staff made this a feast for all our senses. Nothing is wasted in Africa, everything serves its purpose. We have all learned to dance to a different rhythm in Africa. We come away changed forever by this adventure."

July 2000

Justin, Gillian & Ole Kirimbai,"Our two weeks with you have been unbelievable!!! The sights we saw, the people we met, will never be forgotten. You did everything 'first class' and with such enthusiasm and spirit. Your keen sense of humor and practical jokes were a definite 'bonus'. There has never been, and probably never again will be, a wedding as extraordinary as the one you, Gillian and Kirimbai planned for Howard and me. It so far surpassed anything my imagination could dream up. Thank you so very much for everything."
Mary Razore, Medina, WA

June 2000

Justin & Ole Kirimbai, "Your sense of timing is extraordinary. Whether its on the drive or around the fire, everything you and Kirimbai have done seemed like the perfect thing to do at the time."
Roger Sant, Georgetown, DC

Justin & Ole Kirimbai, "To have one's 80th birthday with the best of friends in the Serengeti is as close to perfection as one can get! On top of that, to be in the midst of the wildebeest migration as we were at Musabi, was the result of some luck and some good planning. That was a great camp as was our last in Moru kopjes. The sheer beauty of the Serengeti and the beauty of its wildlife are never to be forgotten. Thank you for the privilege of being there."
Russell E. Train. 2nd safari with Wilderness Africa

Justin & Ole Kirimbai, "You are a superb guide and camp organiser. The attention to detail is fantastic - literally the best run and most pleasant tented camp safaris that we have been on, have been with you. Thanks also to (Wilderness Africa guide) Kirimbai and the rest of your staff. It has been great. And how you managed to plop us in the middle of all 1.5 million wildebeest and organise the perfect double rainbow - wow!"
Bob Waterman 2nd safari with Wilderness Africa

January 2000

"Justin - my everlasting gratitude and respect for your leadership skill, good humour and patience in managing our memorable ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro. It was an adventure immensely satisfying and which will grow in importance as time passes. I especially appreciate your assuming the risk of getting this septugenarian up to the summit. I pay you the highest compliment I can bring to mind for one who excels at his trade as you do - craftsman and professional. Thank you."
The late John E. Robson, Washington DC

August 1999

Justin, “It is very rare when reality exceeds your utmost expectations. Yet Africa, through the eyes and talents of Justin Bell, has made our wildest dreams come true. Your love of the land, your enthusiasm, your vast knowledge of the animals and plants, and your understanding of the history and culture of Tanzania has made this safari the trip of a lifetime.”
Jack Thomas, St Louis, Missouri

March 1999

"I'll let you know as soon as I think of anything that could have made the trip better - but I can't imagine that happening. Thanks for everything."
Roger Sleight. March 1999

August 1996

"Many thanks for brilliant spotting and endless good humour."
Then Deputy Prime Minister of UK. Michael Heseltine, England

January 1996

"Our party was met there by bird sounds, storks in the trees, the smell of fresh departing rain and Justin Bell's grinning camp crew, who handed us cold drinks and carried our luggage off to the tents. Shortly after following our bags, Patricia and I immediately began to discover how laughably inadequate the word camping is to describe the way you live on a first-class tented safari. Our commodious tent featured shower and toilet partitions, a dressing alcove, two comfortable cots made up with crisp linens and soft blankets, bedside tables, fresh bath towels, and a covered, canvas-floored entrance deck with dressing table and wash basins. Those wash basins had been filled with hot water smelling wonderfully of wood smoke, and our six gallon canvas shower bucket was full and waiting for us."
Quote from the "Town & Country" magazine by guest Charles Gaines on his first arrival in camp.

September 1995

"Justin, the Ruaha looks the way Africa should, and the pleasure of camping and watching the birds and animals with you is the way it should always be. In over fifteen safaris we have never been to a more pleasant, well run camp. The little things make all the difference: hangers, mirrors, washcloths, the shelf behind the bed, Ibrahim waiting with cold drinks. It is all perfect - even to having a lion in the shade of a tree while we eat breakfast on the sand. You set a standard unequalled anywhere and you and your staff are truly first among the best. Thanks for an unforgettable week."
Mrs Aileen Train, Washington, DC. 1st trip with Wilderness Africa
